This is the second full length album released by White Zombie on Caroline Records in 1989. An error at the printer left the spine of the record & CD with the text "Let Them Die Slowly". All official copies of the CD and LP for Make Them Die Slowly say "Let Them Die Slowly" on the spine. There are 2 versions of the CD, both of which were made in Austria. One is blue with a skull on it, and the other simply has the White Zombie logo and the name of the album (see scan below).

The vinyl also has 2 pressings, but they are identical. The inner sleeve of the vinyl includes a black and white graveyard picture and a closeup of an angel on a tombstone. The vinyl itself has no etchings near the middle, unlike the previous White Zombie records. The vinyl stickers are pictured below.

Caroline released a fairly extensive presskit prior to the releasse of Make Them Die Slowly that included magazine clippings, a biography and these two wicked looking promotional glossies:

[Make Them Die Slowly Promotional Glossy #1]

[Make Them Die Slowly Promotional Glossy #2]

The album's name comes from a b-rated horror flick in which a guy is captured by cannibals who cut off his penis and eat it. (I never said this was going to be pretty, folks!) Guitarist John Ricci was replaced by J. soon after the album's release due to Ricci's unfortunate case of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. This is when the "La Sexorcisto" riff-oriented sound began. (all hail J.!)

Make Them Die Slowly represented a *major* shift in White Zombie's sound. Instead of punk-influenced sonic-scapes, it is most decidedly metal. When interviewed on a local college radio station (WNYU) at the time it was released, they say that now they are playing more what they have been influenced by, and are trying to keep it simpler. Yet, in the same interview, Rob states that they actually recorded the album *3* seperate times. In the first studio, they ran out of tracks--16 wasn't enough! So they went into a bigger studio and ran out of money. Then it was Bill Laswell and Caroline Records to the rescue. They fronted the cash for the zombies and the record was finally made. Although, Bill Laswell's production was less than great. Where's the bass???

Several tracks were cut from this album as production ground on. The songs not included on Make Them Die Slowly are : Punishment Park, Dead Ringer, Star Slammer, Freak War, and Scum Kill II.

They actually did an international tour with this record, with dates in places like Holland and London. London hated them to say the least. One bootleg recording I have of the London gig features a woman yelling "get off the stage" and "go home". Zombies don't get no respect!! If you want to see my complete list of shows from the Make Them Die Slowly and Soul-Crusher tours, check out my TRADING page.

The really weird thing about this album is that the more you listen to it, the more it grows on you and you realize how brilliant it was for its time. However, after having listened to La Sexorcisto and Astro Creep, it might be tough on some people for the first few listens! x:-)
